Never cut your fringe other than a simple trim to groom it see demo at bottom of page the fringe is part of the oriental rug skeleton.
Cut down oriental rug.
Use a straight edge 1 1 2 2 from the crease and score the rug.
If the rug is older and is thought to have a high value do not cut the fringe as originality is a factor in collector carpets.
Now you are ready to cut.
Oriental rugs are typically woven from side to side across the warp strings which means there has to be an end point.
Hopefully the picture below explains it better.
The repair expert will first secure the fringe and then cut to an even length if it is messy or damaged.
Bleached fringing is not appropriate and will contrast too much with the dusky colors of an authentic oriental rug.
And also as noted it is not at all unusual for those who want to use an oriental rug in a very specific room or space to have it cut down to size.
Genuine oriental rugs need careful handling by an expert in their care and management.
Their rugs either did not fit in the place they wanted or the rugs were damaged to the point that the healthiest way for the rug was just to cut them down while preserving as much of it as possible.
After the hole is fully repaired the area is trimmed down so that it matches the rest of the pile height.
At this stage you don t want to cut all the way through then slowly finish cutting through the rug following the score while pulling up on the part you are cutting off.
